As a result of the riots in Lhasa over Tibet, 30 people have no been sentenced to prison, ranging from 3 years to a life sentence for vandalism, larceny, looting among the chargers. The riots left many people dead, but none of those 30 charged none were charged with murder or manslaughter.
The torch relay continues with protests, even in Hong Kong, but many countries have stayed silent. China still refuses to admit any wrong doing and continue to accuse the Dalai Lama of instigating the riots, even being a leader of Buddhism he advocates peaceful protesting. The people and the monks in Lhasa obviously are unhappy for a reason and for China to go and say to the world media that everything is okay is laughable. It has a record of human rights violation, it is also responsible for the genocide in Darfur. China has come a long way economically and perhaps they have lighten up a bit on freedom of speech, but mainland china still has a long way to go, even compared to Hong Kong which was previously under British control enjoy a more democratic government, ideally if Tibet could operate the way Hong Kong operates I think both sides should be happy. Hong Kong operates its own government, but for major decisions it goes to mainland China and still considers itself Chinese.
The other countries should also step up and at least publicly say that China should reconsider their role in Darfur. Many chinese have expressed their distaste with westerners of how China has been portrayed, to that of course it will be biased, that is unfortunalty how the media is today, but they should also acknowledge their country's mistakes, and also No Country is perfect, but all countries should try and improve and if there are major faults should point them out and try and help.
